Pontiac Firebird 1970 Description
1970 Firebird Trans Am Clone Race Car
Thisisactuallya 1970 Firebird Esprit.
My family is the second owner of the vehicle which we purchased in 1975.
This car has always resided in southern California.
I wanted to turn the car into a Trans Am Race car, so mybrother & I began this project.
This car was a complete car with NO MISSING PARTS when it was taken apart. Every part that was removed was saved in a box and is included(except for the dashboard & carpet). All parts necessary to put the car back together are included. You may need to provide miscellaneous parts like hoses and fittings, a battery, paint, etc…
Brand new exterior parts:
Trans Am front fenders and front interior wheel wells
Trans Amfoilers, spoiler and front air dam
Rearpanel below the rear window (above the trunklid)
Brand-new complete decal kit - Hood Bird, SD 455 for the scoop, Trans Am for the sides & rear spoiler.
Decal colors aredark/light blue.
My intention was to paint the car gloss black with these decals.
The rear bumper has been de-chromed for painting.
The bodywork is 90% complete.
All of the bare metal parts in the photos are perfectly straight, meaning if you primer and block them, they are ready for paint. The front noseandhoodhave not been straightened.
The nose needs a little work to be perfect, the hoodcame from a 76 Trans Am Iowned and it is straight, we just haven’t spent any time to make it perfect.
The black tone on the body is from a rust inhibitor that I wiped on the metal.
The engine compartment was painted gloss black andwas colorsanded to a mirror finish.
We custom fitted sheet aluminum over thefirewallwhich has the same gloss blackfinish.
Additional brand new partsincluded for the re-assembly:
New 4-coreradiator
New braided hose sleeves with anodized blue ends
New spark plug wires
New frontbrake rotors with pads
New aluminum fuel line
Four brand-new centerline rims are included and are still in the factory boxes.
All new weather stripping.
Engine:
Engine is a YC block, totally custom .060 over 455(469cid) with 96cc D-port heads fully ported and polished with stainless valves, (2.12 intake, 1.80 exhaust) custom made 3/8 push rods, Crane aluminum roller rockers, stud girdle, insane .690 intake and .740 exhaust roller cam([email protected]),Venoliaultra-light custom pistons(max lightened), custom light weight wrist pins, nitridedcast crank, Pontiac SD rods shot-peened and polished(and Rockwell tested), 7-quartMilodonoil pan and pump, approximately 10.5 to 1 compression to run pump gas(with these heads), Doug Nash warrior intake extrude honed, custom valley pan, custom Holley 850, MSD 6A on HEI distributor(MSD and Holley are NOT new), custom made billet aluminum pulleys, 2” hooker headers, 3”Flowmastermufflers, custom Darrell Young 10” converter(approximately 2500 stall), 10-boltposi-traction rear end from a late 70s Trans Am with Richmond 3.90 gears. There was an existing tranny cooler mounted in the front of the car. Thereare already new trannycooler lines run behind the wheel wells to the front of the car. This engine and all of the parts listed have never been run or used.
The car still haspower steering.
The valve covers need to be replaced, the ones in the pictures were cheap ones we just installed temporarily until we could find a nice set.
The battery will berelocated to the trunkfor weight distribution.New battery cables are already connected to the starter and routed most of the way to the trunk.
We removed the factory fanand installedan electric fan for added power. Theelectric fan supplied was used fromthelast setup.
I had not yet replaced the transmission which isstilla turbo 350 with a shiftkit,it will probably not be able to survive the new engine. We did install acustom made Darryl Young 10" Torque converter with approximately2500 stall.
The rear end is a stockposi-traction 10-bolt from a late 70s firebird which we installed Richmond 3.90 gears.
The planned exhaust was going to be3" withthe providedflow masters that stops before the rear end.
The suspension is stock but traction bars are installed
TheInterior is the original black firebird seats. The driverseat was redone many years ago andis in good condition.
All other seats are ok but thecorner of the top seams arepulling away.See photos.
The door panels are original - The armrests are cracking on both sides.
The center console is in good shape.
A brand-new headliner and rear deck were purchased and are included.
Brand-new auto meter gauges werecustom installedin the factory cluster, but still need to bewired.
The car does not have a dashboard or carpet.
The rear window has been tinted 5%, but is not installed along with the windshield.
The car does not come equipped with air conditioning, interior heater or power brakes - all of these were removed for weight reduction & for a cleaner looking engine compartment.
This is a perfect project car to have one bad-ass Trans Am when you’re done.Projected power isover 600h.p.
